Many of the students at the Educational Center have not succeeded in their studies on the elementary school level, due to learning disabilities, emotional stress from growing up under the most difficult family and neighborhood situations, or lack of encouragement from their parents. Failure has bred more failure and the students have little if any self-confidence, nor do they believe that they have the ability to do well in school. After many years of discouragement, they have given up on themselves. However, given the proper teaching methods, together with emotional support and encouragement, these same children have the confidence to reach much higher levels of achievement.

The Bet Shemesh Educational and Residential Center's Enrichment Center provides students with essential tools to help them improve their studies. Called an "enrichment" center rather than a learning center, the learning environment emphasizes progress as a set goal for the students who participate. In small groups of 3 or 4 students, and sometimes even in one-on-one sessions, the specialized teaching staff encourages and teaches the children how to succeed.

Significant portions of the students utilizing the small, concentrated studies in the Enrichment Center have learning disabilities including ADHD. Many have developed large gaps in their studies including deficient reading and writing skills and underdeveloped math skills.

For some of the students, the Center provides the opportunity to move ahead of their class and learn additional material.

The Enrichment Center offers three tracks of learning:

1. Learning Strategies - In this track the student learns various methods that will help him succeed at his studies.

2. English language skills- In groups of 3 or 4, the English teacher works very closely with the students to close the gaps and help them understand the importance of being comfortable with the English language.

3. Enrichment -In small groups, the enrichment teachers discuss subjects that are of interest to the students at a higher level. Our students from Ethiopia benefit from the enrichment sessions in order to improve their level of Hebrew.

In addition to the teachers, a coordinator interfaces with the students' families, arranges schedules for the students and teachers, and deals with problems that arise. Each month the teachers prepare progress reports on each child that are reviewed with the coordinator and with the general teacher.
